Liesl Walsh Published on the Cover of Florida Currents Magazine 2014
May 2014 PRECO Florida Currents Magazine Cover, Splashing DuckLiesl Walsh's Splashing Duck photo published on the cover of Florida Currents Magazine May 2014, receiving Best of Show for magazine covers that year.
In my series of recent blog posts I have been writing about my early journey as a photographer and some milestone moments. Today's post is about a special surprise that came after I moved to the west coast of Florida in 2013. I no longer lived close enough to the photo club on the east coast that challenged me and gave me opportunities to grow. The process of moving took over for a while, and gradually as we got settled in I had time to search for a photo club on the west coast, but I couldn't find one like the Indian River Photo Club. My husband Mike became my photo buddy as I lived far away from my mentor and friend, Kathy, who I would occasionally meet halfway across the state to go out and shoot with. My husband has been a great encourager and support to me with my photography. There are days where I am not in the mood to go out and he gets me out in the world to capture something amazing, I am so glad he does that. If it weren't for him I'd have missed out on a lot of great photos.
In the meantime, at our new home we were receiving monthly magazines from our electric company, Peace River Electric Cooperative, Inc. (PRECO). It services a couple of the rural counties in Florida. Each month they would feature members' photos inside, and would publish members' photos on the cover of 6 issues a year after holding a contest. I decided to enter the next contest, but being new to the area I didn't have a lot of photos that would comply to their rule that the photo had to be taken in a county that PRECO serviced. Thankfully they service Indian River County on the east coast, so I had a couple to choose from that I took at LaPorte Farms in Sebastian. I had taken a photo of a duck splashing in the water in their pond, and loved how I was able to capture the moment the water splashed high in the air and dripped of its beak. Later I learned this was not a native duck in Florida, so I had captured a special moment.
Splashing DuckWhile touring LaPorte Farms in Sebastian, Florida, I was delighted to watch a duck playfully splashing in a pond. I captured the moment the water burst high above the duck and dripped off its beak. Later I submitted this image to Peace River Electric Cooperative's 2014 magazine cover contest, and it won best of show! It was published on the cover of their Florida Currents Magazine May 2014, and then republished 3 times inside the magazine in contest promotional pages in their issues for November 2014, November 2015, and December 2015. I was delighted with the results!
I entered my photo "Splashing Duck" because it was vertical and had a lot of empty space at the top and bottom for the magazine's title and words. I had to wait over a month to see if it would be one of the 6 covers. Yay, they chose it! Two months later I went to PRECO's annual member meeting when they announced on stage the images that were chosen. I was surprised to find out that my duck photo had been chosen as Best of Show! I didn't know they were going to choose that category. An extra bonus was a nice credit to our electric bill!
3-22-2014 PRECO Best of Show Magazine Cover ContestLiesl Walsh's Splashing Duck photo received Best of Show during the magazine cover contest for PRECO, Peace River Electric Cooperative, Inc. in 2014. The photo was published on the cover of Florida Currents Magazine May 2014 and 3 times later inside the magazine for contest promotional pages.
In May 2014 I finally saw my "Splashing Duck" photo published on the cover of PRECO's Florida Currents Magazine. (See first photo above). Below is the duck photo published inside of the same issue where they announced the winners of the contest:

In the next year, PRECO would publish my duck photo 3 more times inside future issues of the Florida Currents magazine in their contest promotional pages: November 2014, November 2015, and December 2015. Below is the November 2014 issue:

I was thrilled with my duck photo being published 4 times by PRECO. It was a great experience, and I owe them the gratitude for getting me more excited about publishing photos in general. Little did I know that I would be illustrating a book written by my husband two years later ("Vagabonds in France" by Michael A. Barry). He didn't even know he had a writer inside of him yet. I was encouraged by this great opportunity and chose to submit another photo to Florida Currents for their monthly member photo feature. Read about it in my next blog post.
I hope you are enjoying learning about my journey as a photographer. Feel free to comment and sign the guestbook on my website, I enjoy hearing from you!
